The typical asset classes in a portfolio are cash, gold, REIT, stocks and Bonds/FD. It is better to focus on allocating money between these asset classes rather than worry about mid cap and large cap stocks. But this is Bharat the Mahan and the pundits on this board will swear by sub allocation between various capitalization in stocks only. Oh well, you can not argue with message of the day.

Otherwise, MS in 18 months is just fine. Besides, she can always change her mind and study further after this 18 months is over. It is easier to get financial aid for a MS program first....
